63-81 Chevy Engine Bellhousings
1963-81 Chevrolet Engine 153 Tooth Flywheel Clutch Housings (except 62-67 Chevy II)
NOTE 1: Chevy assembly manual didn't list part numbers
for clutch housings, as they were sent to the assembly
line, from the engine plant attached to the engine. So
other than 100% original cars or engine codes that mention
Heavy Duty clutches, there is no way of telling which housing
is correct.
GM parts manuals can be used for applications, but
the parts listed are for replacement parts, not factory
correct parts. And casting numbers aren't always GM part numbers.
NOTE 2:
Except for casting #3788421 and one type of casting #462606
these clutch housings are interchangable
0.683 HOUSING, Clutch
This is a 1963 Corvette and
fullsize car housing, with a
4 1/8" transmission hole.
462606 2 Types
0.683 HOUSING, Clutch
There are 2 versions with the
same casting number. One is
an A&G body only version.
And the other is a replacement
for part #3858403.
3858401 (ident. No. 3840383)
0.683 HOUSING, Clutch
Not sure why there is 2 part
numbers for the same casting
number.
3858403 (ident. No. 3840383)
0.683 HOUSING, Clutch
Ident. in the parts book listing
means casting number. But
there are housings that are
cast 3858403 and some are
cast with 3840383. We have
owned both casting numbers
and they both come with or
without the ballstud bung.
History:
3858403 replaced 3841551 07-66
Disclaimer:
Most parts that I describe and picture, have identification on or with them, others I can identify from other sources and deduction (educated guess).
Factory correct applications are your responsibility. GM made part and part # changes with no rhyme but a reason (no production interruptions at any cost).
Applications are for replacement parts that were available at the time of parts book printing, and when possible model specific assembly manuals.
My observations come from the parts I have in my collection or other reliable sources your parts may differ.
If Factory correctness is your goal, do more research, join car clubs, forums and buy an assembly manual if one is available for your Project Car (you wont be sorry).
This is a fun and interesting part of the hobby!
