NOTES:
CLUTCH PEDAL PUSH RODS
The parts manuals list part #9774625 ROD as the part for 1964-67 Chevelles. The parts
manuals list part #9774625 ROD as being straight and 12 51/64" O.L., I have 3 N.O.S.
parts that are anything but straight and measure about 13 1/2" O.L. and 13 1/4" pin
to pin. The reproduction I have (My part #314) is the same as the N.O.S part.
The parts manuals also list part #3900524 ROD as the 1st design 1967 part. The parts
manuals say part #3900524 ROD is 12 43/64" developed length (curved pin to pin). The
reproduction that I have (My part # 621), and a used part which I believe is correct, is about 14" O.L.
and 13 1/2" pin to pin.
The parts manuals also list part #3921042 ROD as the 2nd design 1967 part. The parts
manuals don't have a length on part #3921042 ROD, but specifies to be used with
steering column with lower bearing clamp.
The 67 Chevelle Assembly Manual only shows part #3921042 ROD (2nd design), but has
the notation that the drawing was revised on 1-16-67 and the part was #3900524.
Z-BARS
The parts manuals list part #3840836 LEVER for 67 Chevelle except 396 1st design,
and specifies to be used with steering column with lower bearing snap ring.
The parts manuals also list part #3872895 for 67 Chevelle with 396 1st design and
specifies to be used with steering column with lower bearing snap ring.
The parts manuals also list part #3921038 LEVER for 67 Chevelle except 396 2nd design,
and specifies to be used with steering column with lower bearing clamp.
The parts manuals also list part #3921040 for 67 Chevelle with 396 2nd design and
specify to be used with steering column with lower bearing clamp.
The 67 Chevelle Assembly Manual shows part #3821038 Z-BAR as standard, with part
#3921040 Z-BAR for 13817-67 (SS-396), but has the notation that the drawing was
revised on 1-16-67 and the parts were #3840836 and #3872895.
OBSERVATIONS
The big blocks (SS-396) used a different z bar from the small block and six cylinder
engines. This is because of one or a combination of, exhaust manifolds and down pipes,
or the oil pressure sending units of the big blocks are over the oil canister housing
verses the small block sending units on the back of the block.
In January of 1967 GM changed the steering column on the Chevelles. They are
identified by having a clamp to retain the lower bearing as opposed to having the
bearing retained by a snap ring.
CONCLUSION
I believe the correct z-bar/clutch release rod combinations are:
Pre 1-16-67 small block 67 Chevelles #3840836 zbar and #3900524 rod.
Pre 1-16-67 big block 67 Chevelles #3872895 zbar and #3900524 rod.
Post 1-16-67 small block 67 Chevelles #3921038 zbar and #3921042 rod.
Post 1-16-67 big block 67 Chevelles #3921040 zbar and #3921042 rod.
REALITY
If you have a steering column with a snap ring bearing retainer you are ok.
#3840836 zbar is reproduced. (My Part # 94)
#3872895 zbar is reproduced. (My Part # 90)
#3900524 rod is reproduced. (My Part # 621)
If you have a steering column with a clamp style bearing retainer ?
#3921038 zbar is not reproduced I have two, one is for sale. (My Part # 105)
#3921040 zbar is not reproduced I have one it is not for sale.
#3921042 rod is reproduced, but has long ends like the reproduced part #3840835 for
1964 Chevelles I won't sell either of these rods because they rub on the pedal
hanger.
My suggestion is to use the GM part #3920615 zbar for 68-72 Chevelles (my part #029)
with GM Part #3900524 (my part #621). My reasoning is the 68-72 bar is the same
length as the 67 zbars, was used on small and big blocks, and has the clutch pedal
push rod arm bent to clear the steering column. Our part #621 is the longest 67
Chevelle clutch pedal push rod available and will reach the zbar arm without issue.
We have had two customers use this combination and are happy with the results.
Disclaimer:
Factory correct applications are your responsibility. GM made part and part # changes with no rhyme but a reason (no production interruptions at any cost).
Application charts are for replacement parts that were available at the time of parts book printing, and when possible model specific assembly manuals.
My observations come from the parts I have in my collection or other reliable sources your parts may differ.
If Factory correctness is your goal, do more research, join car clubs,
forums and buy an assembly manual if one is available for your Project Car (you wont be sorry).
This is a fun and interesting part of the hobby!
