California Proposition 65
California Proposition 65
I started noticing these serious sounding warning stickers, on automotive parts from suppliers. At first I thought maybe
the paint has some chemicals that California determined was hazardous. But then I started getting unpainted, uncoated steel
parts with the warning labels on them.
Now I'm not an expert on this law, and after a small amount of research, I determined that the law was enacted to protect
consumers against cancer and reproductive health issues.
The problem is that there is an ever changing list of chemicals with unpronounceable names (for me). and it is up to any
company selling items to Californians, to determine whether these chemicals exist in there products, and if they reach a
certain exposure level.
Many of these automotive parts are made overseas, or in small shops in the United States. To comply with the intent of
the law, companies that make or sell these parts to Californians, would have to create a department to research and
determine whether each part needs to have a warning sticker on it. This is an impossible proposition for small companies.
So we can either not ship parts to California, or buy stickers to put on the parts or there wrapping. I have ordered
some stickers, to be attached to the parts that are sourced from other companies, or made in our shop.
These stickers do not mean these parts are hazardous, but please don't allow anyone to chew on the parts we sell. I
know this makes this law virtually useless, but the alternatives are less than palatable.
